D. Saková at the Transatlantic Gas Security Summit in Washington: Energy policy cannot be separated from national security and the opportunities created by artificial intelligence

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic Denisa Saková attended the Transatlantic Gas Security Summit in Washington, an international event focused on the future of energy cooperation between Europe and the United States. The summit brought together representatives of governments, energy companies, and financial institutions from both sides of the Atlantic. The main topic was strengthening transatlantic cooperation to ensure reliable, affordable, and secure energy as a foundation for economic prosperity, industrial competitiveness, and a high quality of life for citizens. Our priority is to secure affordable gas supplies through source diversification, particularly in view of the planned phase-out of Russian gas imports from autumn 2027. In this context, strengthening the long-term energy partnership between the United States and Europe is essential.

“This summit brought together key stakeholders from governments, industry, and the financial sector from around the world and highlighted several important messages. One of the key messages is that economic prosperity cannot be achieved without stable energy supplies and close international cooperation. We must not view energy through an ideological lens, but rather from a strategic perspective. We need all energy sources that are reliable and affordable. That is why, together with my ministerial colleagues, we specifically addressed the issue of restoring oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline, as the current situation is creating uncertainty and posing risks to the energy security of our region. It is essential to address such issues through a coordinated approach and clear guarantees of transit reliability,” said Denisa Saková, Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic.

The summit’s agenda also included the signing of a joint declaration on strengthening cooperation in the field of energy security, as well as a ministerial meeting held in a smaller format focused on a long-term strategy for the development of energy infrastructure.

At the same time, representatives from SPP and Eustream held discussions with foreign partners focused on opportunities for supply diversification and long-term gas procurement contracts. The discussions centered on expanding the portfolio of sources, route flexibility, and strengthening the Slovak Republic’s energy stability in a changing geopolitical environment.

The Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic, in close coordination with the state-owned companies Eustream and SPP, is taking all necessary steps to ensure Slovakia’s energy security. In the face of increasing volatility in energy markets, the government’s priority is to act proactively and anticipate potential risks — to guarantee reliable energy supplies for both households and industry and to ensure that Slovakia remains a stable and reliable partner within the European energy market.

Bilateral meetings were also held with Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director-General for Trade and Economic Security at the European Commission; Ante Šušnjar, Croatia’s Minister of Economy; Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade; Miłosz Motyka, Poland’s Deputy Minister for Climate and Environment; and Anatolii Kutsevol, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine.
