D. Saková: We are already taking all necessary steps to ensure Slovakia has enough gas for the upcoming winter.

At the proposal of the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic, the government approved a measure of general economic interest at its meeting on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. This measure will ensure sufficient gas reserves in Slovakia’s underground storage facilities ahead of the 2025/2026 heating season. The aim is to strengthen the country’s energy security and ensure uninterrupted gas supply for Slovak consumers, especially given the high share of natural gas used for residential heating.

“Ensuring sufficient gas reserves is essential for maintaining Slovakia’s energy stability and protecting our households and industries. As Minister of Economy, I understand the needs of our citizens, and that’s why we are working to prepare Slovakia in advance for any situations that could threaten home heating or business operations during the next winter. This step is also part of our broader effort to achieve energy independence, so we can become more resilient to potential external shocks,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic, Denisa Saková, following the government meeting.

The state-owned company Slovenský plynárenský priemysel, a.s. (SPP) will be required to store the necessary amount of natural gas in underground storage facilities before the start of the heating season. The goal is to reduce the risk of gas supply disruptions during the upcoming 2025/2026 heating period, which could have serious consequences for households and businesses, and to ensure uninterrupted gas delivery even in unforeseen situations. This measure will help ensure Slovakia is well prepared for the winter months.

The approved proposal also aligns with the broader European Union (EU) strategy for ensuring energy security. In line with EU Regulation 2017/1938, which requires member states to maintain adequate gas reserves, Slovakia will strengthen its ability to withstand potential disruptions in gas supply.
