Distribution of energy vouchers to help offset rising district heating and hot water costs for Slovak households begins

The Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic (MoE SR), in cooperation with Slovenská pošta, a. s., is launching the process of generating and distributing energy vouchers to partially cover the increased costs of heat and hot water supplied via the district heating system (DHS) for selected groups of households. This is part of targeted energy assistance aimed at mitigating the impacts of rising energy prices. Compensation for increased electricity and gas prices will be automatically reflected in advance payments from suppliers for households eligible for energy assistance.

Energy vouchers are intended for households that use district heating and hot water and meet the statutory conditions for receiving assistance. Households do not need to submit a separate application.

Energy vouchers will be distributed throughout Slovakia gradually via the services of Slovenská pošta, a.s. The estimated generation and distribution of all vouchers is expected to take approximately two weeks.

The value of each energy voucher will represent one quarter of the calculated annual compensation and will cover a three-month period to partially cover increased costs for the year 2026. The amount of the voucher depends on the floor area of the apartment as determined by the real estate cadastre and on the pricing zone of the specific heat supplier for the given building. The calculated compensation is also based on consumption data and the applicable rates provided by heat suppliers.

Additional energy vouchers will be issued following the first reassessment of eligibility for energy assistance, scheduled for April 2026.

Energy vouchers will be sent to the recipient’s permanent residence address in the form of postal vouchers, which can be cashed at any branch of Slovenská pošta, a. s. An energy voucher will be issued only if the calculated energy assistance for the first three months exceeds 5 euros; it is valid for 45 days. In the event of loss of the energy voucher, Slovenská pošta, a. s. will issue a duplicate with the same validity period.

The recipient of the energy voucher will be the oldest member of the energy-assisted household. If more than one person is registered for permanent residence at the apartment or family house concerned, the person under 60 years of age will be prioritized as the recipient of the energy voucher to relieve the burden on older citizens.

If an eligible household consists solely of minors (under 18 years of age) registered for permanent residence at the address, the recipient will be the legal guardian. If no person is registered for permanent residence at the address, the recipient will be the owner of the apartment.

The energy voucher may be collected by the recipient named on the voucher or by an authorized recipient in accordance with the rules of Slovenská pošta, a.s.::

- the spouse (unless excluded from receiving postal items on behalf of the recipient)

- a guardian acting on behalf of a recipient who has been deprived of legal capacity,

- a parent acting on behalf of a minor,

- an authorized representative holding a power of attorney.
