Joint Statement made by Denisa Saková, Tomáš Taraba and Nippon Steel Corporation representatives

Joint Statement made by Denisa Saková, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic, Tomáš Taraba, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment of the Slovak Republic and Nippon Steel Corporation and U. S. Steel top representatives:

-       Government of the Slovak Republic and Nippon Steel Corporation launched talks regarding U. S. Steel Košice, which is a major employer in the eastern Slovakia and an essential element for maintaining employment in the region.

-       In Tokyo, Japan, talks were held regarding the future of Košice steelworks and current views of Nippon Steel Corporation on its plans in the region.

-       It is premature to talk about the conclusions of the debate in question, as Nippon Steel Corporation does not expect to close the entire transaction sooner than in 3rd quarter of 2024, which will allow Nippon Steel Corporation to assess the feasibility of its plans. Nevertheless, it is important that these constructive talks have begun.

-       We discussed together the views of Nippon Steel Corporation on the decarbonisation of the steel production since Slovakia has resources for this purpose earmarked under the Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovak Republic and in other funds.

-       We look forward to our constructive cooperation that is aimed at finding a solution that will be mutually beneficial for all stakeholders.
