Ministers for Trade and Competitiveness discussed upcoming US tariffs

On Wednesday, 12 February 2025, EU ministers responsible for trade and competitiveness met with the EU Commissioner for International Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič. The main topic of the meeting was the introduction of US tariffs on European countries. These new US trade measures mainly concern steel and aluminium, and could have a significant impact on US–EU trade relations. The Slovak Republic was represented by its Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Denisa Saková.

„We agreed that the situation requires a unified and coordinated approach across the European Union. We absolutely support the European Commission engaging in open and constructive dialogue with the US to find a balanced solution," said Denisa Saková, the Slovak Republic's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy.

The EU's priorities are clearly to protect European economic interests and to preserve free and fair trade. This issue will be the subject of further negotiations within the EU.
