Slovakia and Montenegro: Strengthening Relations that Shape the Future of the Region

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic, Denisa Saková, took part in a working visit to Podgorica. The Slovak delegation, led by the President of the Slovak Republic, Peter Pellegrini, held a series of bilateral meetings in Montenegro focused on deepening relations between the two countries. The main topics included the development of economic cooperation, sharing experiences with the EU integration process, as well as the current security situation in the Western Balkans region.

One of the key points of the program was the opening of a business forum, where 33 Slovak companies were also presented. As part of her program, Minister D. Saková also held a bilateral meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Economic Development, Nik Đeljošaj.

“Both our countries have much greater potential for cooperation. The business forum we opened here is a step towards realizing that potential. Thanks to this, more than 30 Slovak companies from sectors such as energy, water management, construction, and the defense industry had the opportunity to showcase themselves in Podgorica today. We want entrepreneurs from both our countries to have more opportunities to trade, invest, and cooperate. I firmly believe that the exchange of experiences and joint business initiatives can bring concrete results that will benefit people on both sides,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic, Denisa Saková.

Great potential for future cooperation between the Slovak Republic and Montenegro also lies in the field of the green transition, as Montenegro has favorable conditions for the use of renewable energy sources and the development of electromobility. At the same time, Slovakia possesses know-how in the automotive industry, battery production, and smart energy solutions. Cooperation in this area would therefore make sense for both countries, including in the sharing of experiences and the development of supplier chains.

Science and education were also among the important topics in Podgorica. Two cooperation agreements were signed—between the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts, as well as between the University of Prešov and the Faculty of Montenegrin Language and Literature in Cetinje. In this way, Slovakia supports not only economic but also scientific and cultural exchange.

Minister D. Saková also expressed support for Montenegro’s ambition to become the 28th member state of the European Union by 2028. As she emphasized: “We fully support Montenegro in its integration efforts, and just as Slovakia stood by it at the time of its independence, it stands by it today. And we are ready to share our experiences and be a reliable partner.”
