Slovakia is working to develop bilateral relations with partners who have the potential to offer value-added solutions

On Monday, September 15, 2025, the 69th edition of a major international conference organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) began in Vienna. The conference itself will continue until September 19, 2025, with up to 180 member states participating. Slovakia was represented at the event by representatives and experts from the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic (MoE SR) – among those who travelled to Vienna were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Denisa Saková, and State Secretary, Szabolcs Hodosy. On the sidelines of the conference, they held bilateral talks on nuclear energy and the future of low-carbon sources.

“Cooperation with partners is the key to increasing the safety of our nuclear power plants and finding innovative solutions for the future of energy. We are therefore interested in continuing the further development and modernization of nuclear energy in Slovakia, as well as in building partnerships that will contribute to stable and affordable energy supplies for households and industry,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Denisa Saková.

The main topics of discussions were the possibilities for developing the sharing of know-how and value-added technologies in the field of new low-carbon sources, considering the development needs of the nuclear industry in Slovakia. It is also essential to strengthening the energy security of the country and the Central European region – the importance of diversifying sources is growing in connection with the European Commision’s planned measures proposed under REPowerEU, which require strategic decisions in most EU member states.

At the end of the program, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Denisa Saková, also met with Secretary for the US Department of Energy, Chris Wright, to discuss opportunities for cooperation both countries in the field of energy. Another topic of the discussion was next steps necessary for the signing of an intergovernmental agreement between the Slovak Republic and the US in the field of civil nuclear energy sector. The wording of the agreement was approved by the Government of the Slovak Republic at its meeting on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

Negotiations are progressing and we are gradually approaching the signing of the agreement. I believe that nuclear energy can be a great opportunity for both countries – besides helping us strengthen energy security, it will advance research and open the door to the new projects and cooperation between experts. It will also create many new jobs and opportunities for Slovak industry and suppliers to participate in the new nuclear source project,” said Minister D. Saková after the negotiations.
