Slovakia Supports the Development of Advanced Nuclear Technologies. A New Joint Venture for Spent Fuel Reuse is Emerging in Jaslovské Bohunice

The Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic welcomes the creation of a joint venture for the development of an advanced 4th-generation nuclear reactor and the reuse of spent nuclear fuel. This is a strategic initiative that brings together industrial and research leaders in the field of nuclear energy and moves Slovakia closer to a low-emission, safe, and technologically advanced future. The project is based on the cooperation of JAVYS, newcleo, and VUJE, which signed the founding agreement on Monday, 23 June 2025. The Ministry of Economy actively supports the project as part of its long-term priorities in energy security, innovation, and sustainable resource management.

“I am very pleased that we have managed to turn the dream of nuclear research in Slovakia into reality and to strengthen our international standing among nuclear powers. The cooperation of JAVYS, VUJE, and newcleo will bring projects that can involve not only private and state-owned companies but also universities. We are sending a clear signal to the world that we are ready for innovation and that we have the potential to be its epicenter,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic, Denisa Saková.

In connection with this, a professional conference was also held on Monday in Jaslovské Bohunice, which launched strategic cooperation between JAVYS, newcleo, and VUJE. A new joint venture was established under the name Center for Spent Nuclear Fuel Utilization Development, a.s. (CVP), whose task will be the development of the LFR-AS-200 reactor (Lead-cooled Fast Reactor) – a fast reactor cooled by lead, with the capability of reusing spent fuel as an energy source.

“Our goal is to create a solution that will strengthen Slovakia’s energy sector and at the same time serve as an inspiration for the entire European region in the field of safe and efficient use of spent nuclear fuel,” said Peter Gerhart, Chairman of the Board of JAVYS.

As part of the conference, a Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between VUJE and newcleo. The memorandum concerns the development of scalable data centers that could in the future be powered by advanced modular reactors (AMR), thereby linking two key areas – energy and digital infrastructure.

The Ministry of Economy regards the development of 4th-generation technologies as an important step forward – Slovakia possesses the expertise, infrastructure, and spent fuel that, after processing, can be effectively reused. This approach contributes to reducing the volume of waste, strengthens the sustainability of the nuclear cycle, and decreases dependence on external fuel supplies.

The project also creates new opportunities for Slovak industry, research institutions, and technical universities. Their involvement in the development, testing, and future construction of AMR-type reactors will be crucial for the country’s technological competitiveness. Thanks to this initiative, Slovakia is moving closer to safe, clean, and innovative nuclear energy.
