First-ever visit by Moldova’s President strengthens economic cooperation with Slovakia
The Slovak Republic hosted the first-ever official visit by the head of state of the Republic of Moldova—President Maia Sandu—who, together with her delegation, held a series of meetings on March 25–26, 2026, aimed at further strengthening bilateral relations and economic cooperation. Following the visit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Denisa Saková held a bilateral meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization of the Republic of Moldova, Eugen Osmochescu. The meeting confirmed that Slovak-Moldovan economic relations are built on a solid foundation and offer significant potential for further growth. Mutual trade reached a record high of more than 223 million euros in 2025. Both sides agreed on the need to strengthen, in particular, investment cooperation and industrial development.
“We want to further advance our cooperation, particularly in two areas. The first is the transformation of our economies towards higher value-added production based on innovation, modern technologies and industrial development. The second is deepening cooperation in the context of Moldova’s European integration, which also brings new opportunities for Slovak companies,” said Minister of Economy Denisa Saková.
The Slovak Republic has long supported Moldova on its path to the European Union. Moldova’s gradual integration into the EU single market enhances the predictability of the business environment and facilitates access to the broader European market. Promising areas for cooperation include renewable energy, infrastructure and logistics, the digital economy, as well as agriculture and food processing.
The Slovak-Moldovan Business Forum, which took place during the Moldovan president’s visit, also provided an important impetus for the development of economic relations. The signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the investment agencies of both countries creates a structured framework for promoting investment, developing business partnerships, and facilitating technology transfer.
Minister D. Saková also highlighted specific results of the cooperation. The Slovak technology platform MOSY is already helping to improve road safety in Moldova and serving as a practical example of how Slovak innovation can contribute to modernisation and public safety abroad.
Both sides agreed to continue strengthening their cooperation through the Joint Consultative Commission, whose next meeting will take place in Chișinău.
