The Slovak Government Approved Key Measures to Secure Gas Supplies for the Winter of 2026/2027
On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, during its off-site meeting, the Slovak Government approved a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic to declare a matter of general economic interest (VHZ) with the aim of ensuring sufficient natural gas reserves in underground storage facilities in Slovakia ahead of the 2026/2027 heating season. The adopted measure is intended to strengthen the security and continuity of gas supplies for both households and industry, particularly given the significant role of natural gas in heat generation in Slovakia. Through this measure, the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic continues to protect the Slovak market and consumers by helping to ensure the availability of natural gas at affordable prices.
The Ministry of Economy has taken this step in accordance with applicable legislation and European energy security rules. Based on the approved proposal, Slovenský plynárenský priemysel, a.s. (SPP) will be required to ensure that a specified volume of natural gas is stored in underground gas storage facilities.
Specifically, the target storage volumes are:
- 5.644 TWh by July 1, 2026;
- 13.0 TWh by September 1, 2026;
- 17.517 TWh on at least one day between October 1 and December 1, 2026.
The approved measures also set out the conditions for the use of these reserves during the heating season. The stored gas will be used primarily to ensure supplies to end users in the Slovak Republic.
The adopted proposal also supports the Slovak Republic’s compliance with its obligations under European legislation on the security of gas supply and contributes to the stability of the energy market.
The Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic will continue to actively implement measures aimed at strengthening energy security and protecting consumers from volatility in energy markets.
